Soulful Sunday

Early church since we served, Sunday School, quick trip to Targetbfor the upcoming Melendez Baby Shower, a new 19 inch flat screen TV for Mrs. Timm's bedroom - our favorite 97 year old l then an update on our church's finance.

And then Smallville!

Below us from Kendall's Sunday School Teacher/Godmother: We talked about bearing fruit. Kendall said his dream is to help others and that his mom and godfather can help him do this.

I asked what about his incredible godmother!?!?

Buenas noches!

Car and Glasses Errand Day

Kendall asked if we could start our errands in the afternoon so pumpkin pancakes, cartoons and a late start to our day.

A 10,000 mile Honda service and new glasses (bifocals) for me with some BJ shopping. Kendall wanted the sports sunglasses - he looks cool 🤓

Tae Kwon Do and Smallville Friday

Enough said - we are glad it is the weekend!

Buenas noches!

The Radwick Family

3 years ago today The Radwick Family was "officially" established. What's meant to be will always find a way. Very fitting for today. Thank you God for the plan and to Kendall's birthparents - when all is said and done - an incredible soul was created. I am privileged to be a part of it.

Wet and Wild Wednesday

And a Tornado Watch. But we made it to Tae Kwon Do.

Kendall played the recorder in music class when he was not supposed to. He brought home a form to fill out what he did wrong and how he would fix it. I told him I was not writing it did him since I did nothing wrong. So he answered the questions, I wrote it and he had to copy it on the form. He did a great job!

"Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is like a tree going into the sky, and sadness is like the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. The bigger the tree, the bigger will be its roots. In fact, it is always in proportion. That's its balance."

Always be kind...

At Tae Kwon Do, I received an email from Kendall's teacher that he chose some words about a fellow classmate's grandmother that were not nice. She had passed away and Kendall  made a comment that upset him.  Kendall and I talked for quite awhile about use and choice of words. This is a sad time for his friend and classmate. We wrote a card for the family and there was no TV. Kendall was updated by the end of the night.

How to Alwayts Speak with a Ki People may not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel. You may have heard that before, but when you really think about it, you will realise that you actually have great power and responsibility in each of your day to day interactions.
Whether it is a business or social conversation, by thinking about what you say, and how you deliver the message, you have the power to make a great connection.
You have the power to contribute something meaningful, and you also have the power to be hurtful.
Always use your power for good and speak with a kind heart.
Here are my 8 key tips to do just that:-

1. Speak Thoughtfully

While your words may not be remembered years later, choose them carefully.
If the saying “you are only as good as your word” is true, than it only makes sense to speak good words, or words that reflect who you really are.
“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.” – Buddha

2. Speak Kindly

Being kind doesn’t mean that you can’t make your point. Being kind doesn’t mean that you can’t be direct. Being kind will show that you care, regardless of the message.
By sharing your compassion, you might change how someone feels about themselves or a situation.

3. Listen

If you are only thinking about what you are going to say next, you are missing half of the conversation!
If you ask a question, wait patiently for the answer. Even 10 seconds of no talking can seem like an eternity.
“The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.” – Mark Twain
We often like to fill up empty space, especially quiet, empty space, but don’t be afraid of silence.
Sometimes, it is in that quietness that the really good stuff starts to happen.

4. Reserve Judgement

Before you enter a conversation, especially with someone you don’t know very well, it is easy to make a snap judgement.
Before words even come out of their mouth, you have likely formed an opinion.
This may be because of the way they are dressed, a look you thought they gave you, or a story you heard about them.
Make a point to let that go, so you can really hear what they are saying. Do what you need to do to think of them in a loving way.
It might help to think about their family. Are they a father? A daughter? Who loves them?
Giving 30 seconds to think this through will really humanise the conversation.
If you consciously think about the fact that they are in this world, trying to make a great life, just like you, then you will be more invested in the interaction.

5. Be Honest

Speak with integrity and tell the truth. If the truth hurts, be compassionate, but be honest.
This goes especially for business conversations. It’s natural to want to be nice instead of honest, especially if someone is trying to sell you something you don’t need or want. Your honesty will save everyone time.
This is especially important in more serious conversations, for instance, breaking up business or personal relationships, when you say (in so many words), “You are not for me”.
Remember you aren’t saying, “You are not for anyone.”
It is important to get that message across. Just because a person, business, or product is not right for you, doesn’t mean that they are not perfect for someone else.
Don’t say everything – some things really are better left unsaid.

6. Consider Another Opinion

Make sure your argument isn’t about being right. Perhaps there is an option or opinion that really is better than yours.
This doesn’t make your opinion less valid, and your openness to a new idea will likely turn into a new opportunity.

7. Don’t Yell

Once you raise your voice, your words become irrelevant.
Once you yell, you are talking at someone, not with them. When you yell, the only thing someone else is thinking is, “I can’t believe they are yelling.” or “What a jerk.” or some variation of that.
When you yell, you lose control and make the conversation about something completely different.
Instead, when you feel like yelling, lower your voice. Speak softly. You will likely get the point across in a more profound way.
If speaking softly doesn’t work for you, be quiet. Collect your thoughts, take a deep breath, walk away or do something that will distract you from yelling.

8. Say Thank You

There is always time before, during and after a conversation to say thank you.
Thank you for meeting me here. Thank you for bringing that up. Thank you for taking the time to talk. Thanks for the inspiration.
If nothing else, a simple, thanks for your time applies every time.
The way forward – always walk and talk with a kind heart
Conversations happen all the time, but they don’t always happen with a kind heart.
“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.” – Gandhi
If you approach every conversation as an opportunity to learn something new and to treat someone with respect, instead of as a time to speak your mind, your message will be heard, loud and clear.
You will be trusted and more importantly, you really will be as good as your word.

Thoughtful Thursday

Kendall wore the wrong gym pants today.  How wore black ones instead of green.  We leave when it was dark and he had the correct top so I did not notice!  No trouble for him at school though!  It was funny since we were telling embarrassing stories at work while we're introducing ourselves in a new group and mine was picking out my shoes in the dark and without my glasses. I ended up with one navy blue and one black shoe once I arrived at work.  I stayed seated all morning and at lunch went to Payless for a pair of matching shoes :-). We're a pair!

Some math apps,a reading app, spelling, a chat with the Abuelos and The Last Air Bender.

Make It A Shay Day :-0

Thank you Uncle Charlie!

Two Choices

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

“When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?”

The audience was stilled by the query.

The Father continued. “I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.”

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball.

Shay asked, “Do you think they'll let me play?”

I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, “we're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.”

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the Plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, “Shay, run to first!  Run to first!

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second!” Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.  By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball .

The smallest guy on their team now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.  He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.  All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay--all the way Shay!”

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, “Run to third! Shay, run to third!” As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, “Shay, run home! Run home!”

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

“That day”, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.”

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you're thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you're probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren't the 'appropriate' ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the 'natural order of things.'

So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:  do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it's least fortunate amongst them.

You now have two choices:  May your day be a Shay Day…or not.

MAY GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO RECEIVES THIS EMAIL IN MEMORY OF SHAY.

2 Hour Ice Delay Tuesday

Work from home for me, sleeping in for Kendall and fun waiting for the bus. By the end of the day it had rained and was 50C so no ice and less snow.  We are ready for spring with the warmer weather and it was still light when we arrived home.

Two walks for Clark, Peppercorn Steak with Creamed Kale and Potatoes and Spelling.

Camp Big Brother at DMNH

No school so Kendall spent a day at the Delaware Museum of Natural History. He was so excited. We had a late start since drop off is 8am and an early pick up since we had snow and freezing rain in the afternoon. One of the counselor a told me Kendall is the resident Big Zbrother since he helps and keeps an eye on the younger children. He is ready to be Counselor in Training :-)

We made it home and enjoyed Shrimp Risotto.

Kendall made an eagle he says is Abuelo Ricardo and a few other things.

Buenas noches!

Kung Fu Saturday

We tried Tae Kwon Do and Kendall ended up not feeling well. I had an eye appointment and I need bifocals - getting old :-(

We left Tae Kwon Do early to relax before meeting Adrienne and Carlis at Movie Tavern to see Kung Fu Panda 3. We loved the seats and Kendall loved the ultimate cookie with a roasted marshmallow center.  They ended up with an extra order and Kendall was the winner so he has 2 ultimate cookies!

Kung Fu Panda 3 was very good but a lot of adoption themes - lost from parents, 2 dads and looking different than everyone else.

Then onto Smallville. Kendall has learned to go from TV to DVD! He is so proud of himself.

Buenas noches!

"It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight." - Vladimir Nabokov

A double dose of church since Kendall did not pay attention and follow the service in church. I warned him we would go to the 2nd service. He didn't listen so we went twice.

Quick shopping, a red velvet cake and Smallville.

Happy Covalentine's Day! I love you Kendall!

Buenas noches!

Some little flurries and Tae Kwon Do

1/2 day and Valentine's Day school party for Kendall. We switched to the next size Tae Keon Do uniform - Kendall is 5'6 and only one inch shorter than me now then an adult mouth guard.

And Kendall's USA Tae Kwon Do Member card came today!  Plus candy snakes are cotton candy from the Abuelos!

Buenas noches!

Anniversary and Recoup Thursday

Since we are so exhausted from the play last night.  And I have to give a shout out to our favorite waitress at John's Pizza in Malvern - she labeled my sandwich for lunch Mom.

A family that started this day 3 years ago when Kendall and I met for the first time in person.  Kendall will tell you that my written story was so so. More intrigue on my part. Our path is better together. But there was a lot of giggling on both of our parts in person that day. LOVE ❤️

We are chemists in the laboratory of the INFINITE. What, then, shall we create? Ernest Holmes

Buenas noches!

Sense and Sensibility Wednesday

And dinner at John's Pizza with Miss Pam and Miss Deb.  Our favorite waitress packed up 1/2 of our subs for lunch tomorrow. She always remembers Kendall's name!

A wonderful play but 3 hours with intermission. We are ready for bed!

Buenas noches!

2 Hour Delay but Snuggle Tuesday

School started late but we enjoyed some snuggle time. Kendall took the am bus and I headed to work.
