The Substitute Teacher...

yesterday in learning support left the following note about Kendall's behavior: In the morning they were completing the GRADE test, which is a standardized multiple choice test.  Kendall has struggled through the section with his regular teacher on Tuesday, so she was not surprised to read in the note that he did not want to complete the test.  What made her upset was that he reportedly quickly filled in the circles and then began roaming around the room and trying to get on the computers while the other students were still testing. The substitute had to speak to him numerous times and he still continued.  In the afternoon during math, Kendall was sitting in his teacher's rolling chair at the front of the room instead of his own chair.  He did not get out even after the sub asked him numerous times.  It is common for him to go up to the front table during the math lesson, but not sit my chair.  She usually has the students that need additional instruction come up to the front table after my initial lesson for additional practice.  Kendall always comes up for help.  When she spoke to him this morning about the note from the sub, his first reaction was "oops".  He kept on saying"oops" over and ever.  He did explain that he went up to the table during math "because he always does".  

So we have decided if there is a substitute and he misbehaves, he needs to be sent out of the room since it is disruptive for the class. This is not his first time misbehaving for substitutes and we have discuses substitutes before. In all the instances with the substitutes, he has not been disciplined with an immediate negative consequence which I think he must rationalize as OK.  I give him the positive and negative consequence when he misbehaves and he always chooses the positive consequence and rights his behavior. We will write a letter to the substitute teachers this weekend with a behavior chart stating that if  he misbehaves, he should be reminded of the behavior chart and told that he will have to leave the class to go see the principal/guidance counselor (or I should be called to pick him up) with the work he is to complete to the best of his ability. It is not the principal’s/guidance counselor’s job to assist him with the work so if he goes to the principal or guidance counselor he will have to sit quietly and try to the work by himself until his next class. He will have to complete the work with me at home AND receive a punishment.  The last time Kendall and I spoke about misbehaving for substitute teachers I told him he would lose TV /movies on the weekend so his TV/movies this weekend is limited.  He will also work on Saturday and Sunday on schoolwork for same time of the learning support class plus an extra assignment each day.  We also talked about completing work to the best of his ability.
